Shinan district in Qingdao now has a new 4A cultural tourism badge, highlighting its successful blending of historical preservation with modern vitality. Here, red-tiled roofs meet emerald hills and the sea, while century-old streets welcome visitors with culture, leisure, and commerce.
Spanning three square kilometers in Shinan district, Qingdao's historic old city preserves German-style architecture, traditional courtyards, and historic residences, including dozens of protected heritage sites. Restoration follows a "minimal intervention" principle, using traditional crafts to repair and revive more than 23,000 square meters of buildings. Many historic structures now house museums, specialty shops, and interactive cultural spaces, bringing Qingdao's rich heritage to life.
Shinan has also energized its streets with a variety of cultural events. The Qingdao International Beer Festival, the Liyuan Comedy Festival, and seasonal markets draw millions of visitors, while upgraded infrastructure and immersive walking routes make exploration feel seamless.
From Zhongshan Road to hidden courtyards, Shinan offers a blend of Qingdao's history, cuisine, and creativity. Its century-old streets and lively cultural scene now position the district as a model for urban heritage tourism, where tradition and innovation coexist, giving visitors an authentic, memorable Qingdao experience.
