In Qingdao's historic Zhongshan Road cultural block, a creative shop draws crowds with an unusual display—small seafood items like clams, razor clams, and yellow croakers being scooped from a tiled pool. But these aren't fresh catches from the sea—they're plush toys, part of a playful and imaginative line of local souvenirs. Visitors from across China delight in "fishing" for these soft sea creatures, bringing home a lighthearted reminder of their time in the coastal city.
"Young travelers today look for more than just sightseeing—they want to connect with local culture in memorable, hands-on ways," said one shop representative. Among the best-selling items are plush toys inspired by Qingdao's seafood and fridge magnets featuring city landmarks, with some products selling out rapidly during peak seasons.
To better engage this 18–35 age group, Shinan district continues to introduce vibrant, youth-oriented attractions—from trendy dining spots to IP-themed exhibitions. This year alone has seen new projects like the Ultraman Exhibition, the SCO National Cultural Experience Hall, and Team China, which are drawing thousands of new visitors. As one tourist from Shenzhen noted, "It's not just a show—it's a place full of memories and emotion."
With its blend of creative retail, cultural storytelling, and international elements, Zhongshan Road is fast becoming a lively destination for young travelers seeking something truly special.
