Zhongshan Road in Qingdao's Shinan district was once the city's busiest commercial street and remains a key part of its history. Today, Shinan is revitalizing the area by upgrading services and creating new consumption scenes to boost its appeal. On June 20, international journalists from Russia, Canada, South Korea, and other countries visited Shangjieli to experience its renewed charm.
Along Zhongshan Road, visitors can see heritage sites like the Qingdao Club, a nationally protected building from 1910 designed in the German Jugendstil style—a form of Art Nouveau—with many well-preserved features. The street also hosts historic bank buildings, including a branch of the Bank of China, which is a recognized cultural relic.
The Zhongshan Road Urban Memory Museum, located in the former Qingdao Chamber of Commerce building, reopened in 2022. It uses photos, artifacts, and multimedia like AR and VR to share Qingdao's history from 1891 to today.
Shinan's renewal also includes traditional "Liyuan" courtyard residences blending Chinese and Western architecture. Renovated areas like Taixingli offer trendy dining and cultural spaces, while Sanjiangli has become a popular cultural and commercial street.
In 2024, Shangjieli saw a daily peak of 445,000 visitors and over 100 new businesses, continuing Shinan's growth as a vibrant district connecting history and the future.
