Yuanyang Tanglang Quan, which is also known as Mandarin Duck Mantis Boxing, was listed as one of China's national intangible cultural heritages in 2014.
The martial art was created 2,700 years ago during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) and has been developed by a great number of masters. Currently, it is an important part of Chinese kung fu.
As a style of kung fu, the martial art not only consists of brilliant techniques, but also improves physical condition during everyday practice.
Sun Congzhai, an 87-year-old master of the martial art, started to learn Yuanyang Tanglang Quan in 1944. As a master of the martial art, Sun professes to people studying the martial art not to hurt others and to follow traditional Chinese ethics of loyalty, piety and righteousness.
In recent years, instead of teaching the martial art at Yan'erdao Hill Park in Qingdao's Shinan district, Sun has chosen to write his lessons down for his students to read and practice. He passed his title down to his son over 14 years ago. His son, Sun Richeng, has carried the task of spreading the national intangible cultural heritage forward by teaching primary school students the martial art since 2008.
