The plastic cement coastal walkway along Xilingxia Road in the western old part of Qingdao's Shinan district has taken on a new look with lush vegetation and complete supporting facilities, Qingdao News reported.

In response to Qingdao's three-year plan for urban renewal and construction, Shinan district started the coastal walkway and park upgrading project this year to upgrade the local living environment.

A new pocket park named Ocean Happy Park has also been built, featuring pavilions, a children's playground, and sports equipment.

"It is a great space for my family to take a walk after dinner every day. Here children can play and seniors can exercise," said a resident surnamed Chen. 

The coastal walkway spans about 14.8 kilometers from Xilingxia Road to the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, according to an official at the district's urban management bureau.

As of now, more than a half of the upgrading project has been completed and the whole project is expected to be finished by the end of this year.
