China's annual "Lei Feng Day", which was held on March 5, is named after an ordinary soldier who has become a household icon in China for selflessly helping others.
Zhanshan subdistrict in Qingdao city's Shinan district arranged a series of volunteer activities in response to the decades-old call of "learning from Lei Feng" to do good.
Volunteers visited local elderly people such as Sun Yanqing, a veteran who fought in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953), helped clean roads and corridors in residential areas, gave out leaflets about waste sorting, and helped maintain traffic orders near a kindergarten.
The community administration also hosted a voluntary service bazaar which offered more than 10 types of services, including free hair cutting for the elderly, psychological guidance, as well as ophthalmology medical treatment consultations, legal advice, and investment and wealth management.
In fact, the Zhanshan subdistrict has incorporated volunteer activities into its efforts to improve the business environment.
A volunteer team of more than 60 people from 18 units in the law, banking, human resources, and healthcare sectors has visited local office buildings on a regular basis to learn about firms' operational challenges and has assisted in the resolution of more than 130 issues.
