A horticultural market has recently begun trial operations in the Zhongshan Park in Shinan district, Qingdao. It is the first of its kind in the city.
More than 20 stalls provide various types of horticultural plants, including kaffir lilies, rhododendrons, and bonsais, attracting many residents.
According to Liang Ming, a proprietor at the horticultural market, cultivating bonsais requires several years of effort, and the branches must be planted in the proper positions. A well-cultivated bonsai may take eight to nine years to complete.
The bonsais are now sold at reasonable prices at the market and the proprietors are sharing their rich experiences free of charge.
"The green plants are in large demand, especially among young people, as they can brighten up the home," said Zhang Yong, another proprietor at the market. "Some don't need much sunshine and are easy to cultivate."
The market has been praised by many residents, as it is convenient for them to buy flowers at the park. It is open every Saturday and Sunday during its trail period, and will be expanded after it begins official operations.
More horticultural activities are expected to be held in the near future to help residents get involved in nature, said Wu Xianye, deputy director of the Qingdao municipal bureau of forestry and landscaping.
