Qingdao unveils national VR innovation center

China National Virtual Reality Innovation Center (Qingdao) was unveiled in Qingdao city, East China's Shandong province, on Nov 12 to create a favorable innovation environment for the whole chain of VR industry and promote its high-quality development.

It is the third national industrial innovation center in the province and is expected to build six platforms for R&D, testing, quality control, technical services, human resources development, and international cooperation.

Constructed by Qingdao VR Research Institute, the center, which has a registered capital of 134 million yuan ($18.78 million), has finished two rounds of capital raising and share expansion. Some of the shareholders are leading VR companies such as Goertek and PICO.

"Solid foundation has already been laid for the development of the VR industry in Shandong, the opening of the National Virtual Reality Innovation Center (Qingdao) will further integrate upstream and downstream resources and create a favorable VR innovation environment," said a senior official of the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Shandong province.

The center is also expected to promote commercialization of sci-tech achievements, increase the supply of common technology in the industry to build a world-class VR hub in Qingdao.
