Qingdao's marine tourism booms during New Year holiday

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2026-01-06

Qingdao's maritime tourism boomed during the 2026 New Year holiday. Voyage numbers, passenger volume, and revenue all more than doubled year-on-year, signaling a sustained boost for the city's winter tourism.

Official data shows total voyages reached 489, a 111 percent rise. Passenger numbers jumped 204 percent to 36,437, and revenue shot up 271 percent, showing the strong pull of the "travel Qingdao on the sea" brand. A "ticket stub economy" promo, offering 50 percent off sea tours with arrival tickets, converted 5,901 arrivals into consumers.

In three days, Qingdao welcomed 121,900 tourists, a 44.78 percent year-on-year increase from last year, and revenue climbed 95.11 percent.

This success came from a mix of high-quality offers, including specialty foods, cultural markets, shows, maritime tourism, and marine science education. By using its top resources, the city created a mix of attractions, drawing in diverse groups from families to young travelers and boosting the winter tourism market.

A "tourism-plus" model created full holiday experiences. Qingdao Underwater World had 21 daily shows, like the "undersea New Year concert", boosting visits and revenue. Events like the 10th Qingdao New Year Run, the first "sweet economy" month, and a waterfront "winter seagull market" with food, shopping, and activities added to the city's vibrant winter tourism.
