Located in the West Coast New Area of Qingdao, a coastal city in East China's Shandong province, the Xihai Art Museum was named the "Art Museum of the Year" at the recent BBART Night, an annual event by BBART, China's first international art magazine first published in 2011.
The Xihai Art Museum, which was created by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel and landscape designer Gilles Clément, beat four other art institutions to win the accolade.
The award committee commended the museum for its integration of a coastal cultural temperament and a rich exhibition space, as well its efforts to use art to influence a wider range of areas and inject new vitality into urban development.
The Xihai Art Museum, often dubbed "the most beautiful seaside art museum" in China, was named one of the 14 must-visit art museums in the world in 2022, and one of the "Top 10 Art Institutions of the Year" by the Chinese Art Gold Star Award. It is also the winner of the 6th Idealist Future Award.
