Qingdao sees boom in tourism over Spring Festival holiday

Seventy-four A-level scenic spots in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province received 1.29 million tourists, up 14.85 percent year-on-year and generating operating revenue of 27.29 million yuan ($3.66 million) during the seven-day Spring Festival holiday starting from Jan 31, according to figures released by the Qingdao municipal bureau of culture and tourism on Feb 6.

Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, which fell on Feb 1 this year, is a traditional holiday for family reunions and a peak season for consumption.

Official statistics show that the 60 monitored star hotels in the city posted an average occupancy rate of 14.09 percent during the holiday. The occupancy rate of five-star hotels was 24.03 percent, while the figure for four-star hotels was 7.52 percent, and the figure for three-star hotels was 12.6 percent.

During the holiday, Laoshan Mountain, a popular scenic area in the city, received 71,200 tourists, up 16.01 percent year-on-year. Its revenue reached 3.52 million yuan, up 120.12 percent year-on-year.

Ice rinks and snow arenas in Qingdao gained in popularity during the holiday, attracting thousands of visitors as the ongoing Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games has ignited a passion for winter sports among locals.

The city's consumer market also saw a strong recovery this year, as COVID-19 is brought under firmer control and more supportive measures are in the pipeline.

During the Spring Festival holiday, the city's 10 key trade enterprises achieved sales of 756 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 11 percent.
