The core content of a smart city

Each city's smart city construction efforts should be tailored to the characteristics of that city's development strategy.

Zhou Bin, vice-president from Jiangsu Post & Telecommunications Planning and Designing Institute, said at the forum that according to his practical experience, the core value of big data lies in industrial convergence.

Zhou took the project Smart Nanjing as an example, the second phase of which is under construction and has demonstrated big data's large role in smart city management.

"The core of this project is the integration of lots of e-government information, including data on agriculture, industry, government affairs and even geological data for different applications," Zhou said.

Zhou introduced that their team also worked for the 2014 Summer Youth Games held in Nanjing as the only technical support staff for the integrated management of the competition schedule and reserve guarantee work.

"If we think in a broader context, big data will contribute to the sustainable development of mankind," Zhou added. "The innovation model of big data, just like smart city construction, with its own development, it will become more and more intelligent."

"Qingdao government should see that the enormous investment in big data industry is well worth it for the high returns in smart city construction and the progress and development of human society".

The 2016 Global Big Data Applications & Research Forum took place in Huangdao District in Qingdao, Shandong province from Nov 16 to 18, attracting more than 600 experts and industry leaders from home and abroad, such as Kirk Borne, a global top 25 big data scientist, and John Margaglione, global vice-president of systems engineering at the Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) Big Data Platform.

The Qingdao New Coast New Area (Huangdao District) was designated by the Shandong provincial government to build a comprehensive experiment demonstration base of big data in October.
