The 2012 Badminton Asia Championships will be held in Qingdao from April 17 to April 22, attracting over 250 players from 21 countries and regions in Asia, according to the news conference held on April 12.
"Players will accumulate experience for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup," said Li Yongbo, head coach of China's national badminton team. Li noted that victories in the tournament are important for players like Chen Jin and Li Xuerui who are striving for Olympic tickets.
"Although world No 2 seed player, Lin Dan and female world champion, Wang Yihan have already guaranteed their 2012 London Olympic tickets, they will also participate in the tournament," Li added.
According to Li Yongbo, the tournament is a precious opportunity for Chen Jin, who currently ranks No 5 in the men's singles and lags roughly 900 points behind his main competitor from Denmark, Dane Peter Gade.
The Champions will be the last point race before the 2012 London Olympic Games, featuring men's and women's singles and doubles and the mixed doubles with $150,000 at stake as the total cash prize.
Yang Min, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Qingdao Conson Development Co Ltd, told China Daily that badminton fans will witness a highly competitive tournament because of the elite players who have confirmed their participation.
"Sponsors will do all that is possible to assure a wonderful experience for fans," said Yang Min.
Qingdao has rich experience in hosting high-level international competitions, including the 2011 Sudirman Cup World Mixed Team Badminton Championships, in which China defeated Denmark by 3-0 and took home the crown.
