10 sailing events in Qingdao

In order to inherit the Olympic culture and the Olympic spirit as well as to display its charm as a "sailing city”, Qingdao can point to “Ten Events”(as follows) at home and abroad in recent years.

1. City brand promotion and Qingdao Yacht

To improve the Olympic sailing city's international reputation and influence, Qingdao launched a global campaign, “Meeting Olympic, Sailing Qingdao,” in September 2004, holding 39 promotion activities in 23 foreign countries and regions, including Tokyo, Seoul, , Paris, and New York City. Qingdao Yacht’s sailing around the world promotes the city’s reputation as an Olympic sailing city.

2. "Qingdao-Kiel" youth sailing camp

To popularize and promote sailing, Qingdao, together with the German city of Kiel, has organized the "Qingdao - Kiel" youth sailing camp activities and conducted a bilateral training youth exchange program since 2005. Three sailing camps have trained 2,600 youths in the basics of sailing.

3. 2006 & 2007 international regattas

As the partner city in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the first sailing city in China, Qingdao has organized the 2006 International Regatta and the 2007 International Regatta. More than 50 countries and regions around the world participated in the races, laying a strong foundation for Qingdao to successfully hold Olympic Sailing Games and the Paralympics Regatta.

4. Clipper Round the World-Qingdao stopover

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race arrived in Qingdao three times: in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Qingdao Yacht was the only one from China to participate in the race.

5. Sailing sports on campus

In 2006, Qingdao started to introduce sailing sports on campuses. After four years of efforts, sailing sports have become popular among youth groups. In 2007, Qingdao was awarded "the Model City popularizing sailing in China Youth ".

6. Sailing exchanges with Japan and Korea

Since 2006, the Qingdao Sailing Association and sailing associations and clubs from Japan and Korea have had friendly and cooperative relations, carrying out large sailing exchanges among the countries.

7. 2008 Beijing Olympic Regatta and Paralympics Olympic Regatta

After seven years of meticulous preparation, Qingdao helped provide an efficient and orderly event security, creating an open and harmonious social atmosphere during the Olympics.

8. 2008-09 Volvo yacht race Qingdao stopover

From Jan 29 to Feb 14, 2009, Qingdao successfully held the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race leg, which is another of the world's top professional sailing events.

9. Olympic sailing museum

On Aug 9, 2009, the first Olympic sailing museum in the world was officially opened at Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center.

10. Qingdao International Sailing Week

Qingdao City held the first "Qingdao International Sailing Week" in 2009, from Aug 18 to 28.
