Introduction to the Port of Qingdao

The Port of Qingdao was established in 1892. It is an important hub of international trade and sea-going transportation along China’s Yellow River Basin and on the west coast of the Pacific. The port has established trade relations with over 450 ports in more than 130 countries and regions across the world. It enjoys the natural advantages of deep and wide water, and is free of ice and silt.

The Port of Qingdao is composed of three areas: Qingdao Old Port, Huangdao Oil Port and Qianwan New Port. It provides services of loading and unloading, storage and logistics for containers, coal, iron ore, crude oil, grain, etc. Passenger service is also provided at the port. It is a comprehensive million-ton capacity port capable of handling all kinds of general cargo, bulk cargo, and large equipment.

The Port of Qingdao is among the strongest of world ports in terms of comprehensive strength. Boasting the world’s largest terminals for containers, crude oil, iron ore, coal, and bulk grain, the port can accommodate the largest vessels in the world.

The port has been 2nd largest for foreign trade throughput in China for years. It is the largest port for inbound iron ore in the world, and the largest port for inbound crude oil in China.

According to the Competitiveness Index of Chinese Ports, the Port of Qingdao has been the most competitive port in innovation for years. Taking the 9.6 million km2 land of China as its hinterland, the port has won the recognition of its customers with its quality service. It was titled as an “enterprise of Chinese customer satisfaction”。The port’s service brand of “Sincerely Greeting Guests from All over the World” was accredited as a famous service brand in Shandong province, and was recognized as the No.1 brand of port service.

The Port of Qingdao is the most resources-conserving port. In 2007, the port’s total throughput reached 265 million tons, accounting for 6.9% of China’s total throughput with just 1.8% of the country’s berths. Consumption of energy for unit throughput has dropped by 28.34% since 2001, decreasing by 4.4% annually. It is the first to convert container RTG from consuming diesel to using electricity, saving millions of RMB in costs and eliminating the emission and noise. The ongoing operation optimization project for container terminals at the port lowers the deadhead time for container trucks to the minimum and realizes a revolution for the organization of container handling operation.

The Port of Qingdao is a most beautiful port. It launches the 3 environmental protection projects of “blue sky, clean water and green land”, ensuring that there is no smoke in the air, no dust on the ground and no float age on the sea. At the port area, flowers bloom from spring to autumn, and green vegetation flourishes all year long. With the aim of saving energy, lowering emission, reducing pollution and increasing profits, the port invested RMB 60 million in 2007 for the construction of the dust suppression walls and for the covering of cargo like coal and iron ore that is apt to produce dust. In so doing, no pollution is caused in the handling of coal and iron ore. With its achievements in environmental protection, the port has been titled a “Model Unit in China’s Afforestation Campaign”, one of the first “Environment-Friendly Enterprise of China”, etc.

The Port of Qingdao attaches great importance to opening itself up. 7 of the Fortune 500 companies have joined hands with the port. QQCT (Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal., Ltd.), a joint-venture between Qingdao Port Group, Cosco, Maersk, has generated good economic and social benefits. QQCTN (New Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal Co., Ltd.), the port’s joint-venture with Cosco, Maersk, DP World, and Pan Asia International Shipping (HK) Ltd., is now under construction. The new joint-venture will develop and operate the 3400meter-long quay for 10 container berths. With the longest quay in the world and the latest handling machinery, QQCTN will become the worlds most advanced and capable container terminal. At this stage, 2 berths are ready for operation.

The broad-minded Port of Qingdao, China’s Port of Qingdao and the world’s Port of Qingdao, always welcome you.
