As the Chinese New Year approaches, the Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA) has come alive with a burst of festive energy, and its historic open-air markets have transformed into hubs of tradition and celebration.

Poli Market, with over 300 years of history, was listed as a city-level intangible cultural heritage in 2012. Here, the air is filled with the aroma of local dishes like Poli roasted chicken, mutton soup, and seafood pancakes, while stalls offer everything from daily goods to fresh produce.

Lingshanwei Market dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), giving it a history of more than 600 years. It remains a beloved destination for one-stop shopping. Fresh seafood, flowers, vegetables, and handmade crafts draw crowds seeking both convenience and cultural connections.

Xin'an Market, also with a rich history dating back six centuries, features more than 1,000 stalls neatly divided into sections from grains to textiles. At this time of year, it glows with red couplets and paper-cutting artworks, radiating a warm festive spirit.

More than just shopping venues, these markets serve as living museums of folk culture, preserving memories and sustaining the lively heartbeat of Qingdao WCNA’s local traditions.
