Qingdao FTZ pioneers drone technology for maritime logistics

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: January 28, 2026

The Qingdao Area of the China (Shandong) Pilot Free Trade Zone (Qingdao FTZ) has successfully conducted a landmark trial flight for drone-based ship supply at anchorage, marking a significant advancement in integrating unmanned aerial technology into maritime logistics.

In collaboration with Qingdao's municipal transportation bureau, this pioneering trial — the first of its kind in northern China — demonstrated how drone-based supply chains can improve both efficiency and safety in port operations.

The trial involved four local logistics and technology firms and commenced at the Qingdao West Coast New Area's general aviation airport. The drone then navigated to an anchorage within Qingdao Port, where it made a precise material drop using advanced hovering and cable-release technology.

Real-time tracking through the Qingdao Low-altitude Flight Regulatory Service Platform provided full digital oversight, ensuring smooth coordination between drone operators and port authorities. This trial not only proved the feasibility of drone-based logistics but also highlighted the potential for safely automating operations in complex maritime environments.

This innovation addresses long-standing challenges in traditional anchorage supply chains, paving the way for smarter, greener, and more efficient logistics solutions at Qingdao's ports.
