Qingdao WCNA emerges as China's micro-drama production hub

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: December 11, 2025

As the micro-drama industry surges toward a 100 billion yuan ($14.1 billion) market and Chinese stories captivate audiences in over 200 countries and regions, Qingdao, the Film Capital, has firmly established itself as the core engine of this content revolution. This rapid growth is fueled by three major "micro-drama factories" located in the Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA).

A key facility is the Haihao Qingdao Real Scene Studio within the Qingdao Movie Metropolis, officially operational since March. This massive 12,000-square-meter venue provides a comprehensive, immersive ecosystem of over 20 themed spaces, covering modern, period, and international settings. These range from police stations, subway stations, and hospitals to specialized period rooms and various contemporary home styles, satisfying diverse production needs.

Established in April 2024, the Northern Micro-dramas City provides comprehensive support for micro-drama production. It integrates over 100 shooting scenes capable of simultaneously accommodating multiple production crews. Beyond locations, the base offers full value chain support, including production, casting, costumes, and script services. By November this year, the facility had hosted the completion of 242 micro-dramas, boasting an approximate 30 percent hit rate for blockbusters.

Adding a local dimension, Beiliangjiazhuang village is pioneering a rural vitalization model by converting idle homes into shooting bases. Using the village's unique natural scenery and rustic charm, it focuses on producing rural-themed short dramas, successfully tapping into a niche market while driving local growth.
