The China Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka hosted a special event for the UN Ocean Decade Cooperation Center on July 29. This event, a key part of Shandong Week, highlighted China's, especially Shandong's, commitment to the UN Ocean Decade initiative and its efforts for international marine cooperation.
Sun Shudong, deputy director of Qingdao West Coast New Area (WCNA) Marine Development Bureau, discussed the UN Ocean Decade Cooperation Center's role in organizing major international events like the 2024 Marine Cooperation and Development Forum and the first Ocean Decade International Coastal Cities Conference.

He emphasized the creation of special funds for marine biodiversity protection and environmental monitoring, connecting global blue economy resources, and fostering cooperation among marine cities.
Solutions and practical cases from China received significant attention. The East Asia Marine Expo, now in its eighth year, attracted over 500 exhibitors and 80,000 visitors in 2024, resulting in over 360 cooperative agreements. The 2025 edition will be held in Qingdao West Coast New Area from Sept 7 to 9.
Additionally, the commitment of civilian efforts in marine conservation was highlighted by Liu Shujie, a fisherman from Langya town, Qingdao WCNA, and his volunteers on China's first seahorse conservation team. Their six years of dedication to protecting seahorse habitats, through patrols and educational outreach, resonated with the audience.
The UN Ocean Decade Collaborative Centre on Ocean-Climate Nexus was launched in Qingdao WCNA in September 2023, marking the region as the first local government in China to actively engage with the UN Ocean Decade initiative.
The event facilitated extensive exchanges between the UN Ocean Decade Cooperation Center and various representatives, enhancing its global presence and expanding its network of international partners.
