As China's ninth national-level new area, Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA) is steering toward marine-powered development. Anchored by a comprehensive modern marine industry system, the area is emerging as a key engine in building a strong maritime nation.
With 298 marine innovation platforms and 11 national marine research institutes, the area continues to foster breakthroughs. In 2024, a wave energy converter developed by a Tsinghua University-led team won the top prize at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, signaling a leap forward in marine energy technology.
The region's marine economy is thriving. From offshore aquaculture to marine pharmaceuticals, key projects like the anti-cancer drug BG136 and the expansion of marine biomedicine hubs are boosting global competitiveness. Over 7.9 million marine professionals and 27 marine-related academicians now contribute to this fast-growing ecosystem.
New infrastructure, such as Asia's first automated terminal and a rising international shipping hub, are deepening integration of ports, industry, and city development. Since 2025, the UN Ocean Decade Secretariat has been hosted by the area, reinforcing its role as a global marine collaboration center.
Qingdao West Coast New Area is fast becoming a vivid example of how innovation, openness, and sustainable development can power the future of marine economies.
