Qingdao town launches digital platform to promote intangible cultural heritage

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: May 16, 2025

Boli town in Qingdao West Coast New Area has launched the ''Boli Intangible Cultural Heritage Handicrafts'' mini program on WeChat, marking a major step forward in combining digital innovation with traditional craftsmanship. Developed in collaboration with Qingdao Rural Vitalization Digital Trade Innovation Park, the program offers a dedicated section for the online sale of local cultural products under the ''Pinlang Youxuan'' mini app.

The initiative aims to broaden sales channels, enhance brand visibility, and boost local incomes through the integration of modern technology with centuries-old techniques. The platform's first batch of 12 products includes Boli red mats, wheat straw paintings, and roasted meats. Each item is presented with detailed production descriptions and cultural insights, enabling users to easily explore, learn about, and purchase the items through an intuitive interface.

With 34 handicrafts and 20 intangible heritage items—more than any other town in Qingdao—Boli has become a model for cultural vitalization. By blending tradition with innovation, the town has developed exhibitions, themed festivals, and training programs that have attracted over 400,000 visitors annually and fostered a new generation of skilled artisans.

Boli continues to deepen its ''heritage + internet'' model, aiming to create sustainable growth, support rural vitalization, and inject lasting vitality into traditional arts through digital transformation.
