As the 12th month of the traditional Chinese calendar arrives, the Chinese New Year ambiance of the Lingshanwei fair in Qingdao West Coast New Area grows richer.

The grand fair boasts over 500 stalls lined with a diverse array of festive goods. The melodic calls of vendors resound harmoniously as a steady stream of visitors pours through the market.

For locals, exploring the century-old market, making festive purchases, and reveling in folk traditions have become cherished ways to embrace the holiday spirit.

The fair is one of Qingdao's oldest rural markets, with a history stretching back over 600 years to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

"I live nearby, just a short walk away. Since I was a kid, I've loved markets. Despite the rapid urbanization, the timeless tradition of gathering at the market remains unchanged," said a resident in their sixties.

Once frequented mainly by the middle-aged and elderly, the fair is now witnessing an influx of young visitors and becoming trendier. Due to the younger crowd, the fair's offerings have diversified, with a particularly comprehensive selection at the flavorful food stalls, where queues can get quite long.

In 2024, Lingshanwei subdistrict carried out a comprehensive upgrade of the Lingshanwei fair, enhancing safety, facilities, sanitation, and more. Today, the market is more than a mere trading hub – it has become a multifaceted service platform that combines culture, leisure, entertainment, and eco-conscious consumption.
