Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis eyes virtual production

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: March 17, 2022

The Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis is preparing to build a next-generation LED virtual shooting system, local media reported on March 15.

The Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis is one of the largest film studio complexes in the world and is located in Qingdao West Coast New Area. Blockbusters shot there include "The Wandering Earth" and "Pacific Rim: Uprising".

Sun Hengqin, president of the Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis Industry Group, said: "We plan to deploy film-level LED virtual shooting in the Oriental Movie Metropolis. This is a relatively large layout because the technical requirements are very high. We are in close contact with some film directors, directors of photography, and foreign equipment suppliers, preparing to make breakthroughs in film-level virtual shooting technology."

The virtual production platform of the Oriental Movie Metropolis is a high-standard digital studio in the industry. It is customized by a Hollywood technical team, and its technology is at the forefront in Asia.

The platform integrates motion capture, virtual shooting, face scanning, visual scripts and other technologies, and is equipped with high-end virtual production equipment such as face scanning array, vehicle-mounted mobile 3D scanning array, a real-time rendering cluster, Previs and DIT.

More than 100 motion capture cameras in the studio can simultaneously capture the movements of up to 11 people on the same screen, and can also track objects 16 millimeters away from 30 meters.

The virtual production platform has played a huge role in the early stages of sci-fi blockbuster production. Science fiction movie makers can produce visual scripts before shooting, which will greatly improve the work efficiency of the crew.

In addition, the Oriental Movie Metropolis has also built a digital audio-visual center covering an area of nearly 20,000 square meters to provide the crew with full-process post-production services in sound effects, visual effects, editing, and color grading.
