In 2021, the GDP of Qingdao West Coast New Area (WCNA) reached 436.85 billion yuan ($68.88 billion) with a year-on-year increase of 10.3 percent, accounting for 30.9 percent of the city's total, ranking first among 137 counties and districts in Shandong province.
The added value of the primary industry was 9.21 billion yuan, the secondary industry 163.833 billion yuan and the tertiary industry 263.80 billion yuan, an increase of 6.30 percent, 8.00 percent and 11.80 percent, respectively.
WCNA's efforts in optimizing its industrial structure is complimented by the prosperous economy.
The high-tech industry has been growing at a rapid pace. The overall industrial production value of high-tech businesses above designated size increased by 18.9 percent to 248.64 billion yuan.
Foreign trade has also been a driving force in the new area. In 2021, overall foreign commerce reached 311.56 billion yuan, up 44.2 percent year-on-year.
In 2021, the new area had 1,641 projects under construction, with a total of 791.8 billion yuan in investment. There are 29 provincial-level significant projects among them, with a total investment of 81 billion yuan and a 135 percent investment completion rate.
