Laixi puppetry: A timeless tradition finds new life on global stage
Lively Laixi puppetry from Qingdao, with its demonstrative, rod-controlled puppets, captivated audiences in Thailand during a tourism promotion event for Shandong on Nov 19. Under the stage lights, puppeteers deftly maneuvered delicate figures, their sleeves flowing gracefully to the music. The performance culminated with a puppet using calligraphy to write the Chinese characters "hua hao yue yuan", or blooming flowers and full moon, earning enthusiastic applause from Thai spectators.
For Jiang Yutao, a fifth-generation practitioner of Laixi puppetry, the response exceeded his expectations.
"We never anticipated such strong interest from Thai travel professionals, or that our puppetry-themed refrigerator magnets would sell out," he remarked. The warm reception underscores the successful creative evolution of Qingdao's intangible cultural heritage.
With a history dating back 2,000 years, Laixi puppetry has been revitalized through innovative approaches. The troupe has modernized traditional stories like The Farmer and the Snake with contemporary themes and collaborated on socially relevant plays about governance and civic life. Immersive formats now allow audiences to participate backstage, deepening their engagement.
Cross-disciplinary performances further expand its appeal. Works like Blooming Flowers and Full Moon integrate puppetry with calligraphy and dance, while collaborations with traditional music recreate historical scenes, offering multi-sensory cultural experiences.
Technological and product innovations are also driving its revival. Using materials like paper pulp and 3D printing, artisans are able to create more expressive puppets, while cultural products such as magnetic theater stickers serve as accessible ambassadors of the art form.
Once upheld by a few dedicated inheritors, Laixi puppetry is now carried forward by a vibrant young troupe. From weekend family workshops in Qingdao to international stages, its journey reflects how traditional culture can thrive by embracing creativity and connectivity — preserving the past while inspiring the future.
