Seaweed turns Qingdao coastal wetland into stunning sea of red

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2024-08-20

In the Wuhekou area of Qingdao West Coast New Area, a captivating natural phenomenon is unfolding. The coastal marshlands are experiencing a striking transformation, as Suaeda salsa, a type of seaweed, changes color from green to a vivid reddish-purple. This dramatic shift is giving the marshlands a unique red tint that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

Suaeda salsa, known for its resilience in saline-alkali environments, is creating a stunning visual display as its hues deepen with the changing seasons. The vibrant red of these plants stands out against the winding rivers that meander through the marshlands, as well as the old boats and bridges that dot the area.

Adding to the scene's charm, waterfowl have made the marshlands their home, bringing life and movement to this already stunning tableau.
