Old downtown areas are windows into the past and play a key role in helping people understand how a city has evolved over the years. As part of a three-year citywide protection and redevelopment campaign launched in 2022, old downtown areas in Qingdao, Shandong province have taken on a whole new look.

Among these areas is the coastal area of Shinan district - a must-visit. Today, the area is not only a showcase of Qingdao's unending charm, but has also become a place to relive the past, with the transformation of the old city playing a crucial role.

The historical area of Shinan district is mainly concentrated in the western part of the city, with the area near Zhongshan Road at its core. It was from this area that Qingdao grew and developed, and it is home to many historical and cultural attractions.

During the city's urban renewal process, Shinan has prioritized the preservation of historical traditions, making the most of historical and folk culture to create unique neighborhoods that combine history and culture with vibrant, modern elements. This approach has made urban renewal an important means of realizing the development potential of historic districts.

"The historical district of Zhongshan Road is very lively now, especially on weekends and holidays. It feels different from before…it's not just an ordinary old area, it has more places to explore and enjoy. People can better feel and experience what makes old areas like this special, and I think that's the most important thing", said a local resident.

The revitalized old city has not only substantially improved the urban environment and historical heritage of Qingdao but has also brought unlimited possibilities to regional economic development.
