Qingdao's Xinhao Hill: High-tech hub with 5G communication

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2023-12-14

Qingdao's Xinhaoshan Park, formerly known as Big Rock Hill, is located in Shinan district of Qingdao, East China's Shandong province.

It was named Xinhao or Signal Hill due to the construction of a signal tower used to guide ships into and out of the Port of Qingdao. The park is known for its unique red mushroom-like towers, which have become an iconic part of Qingdao's landscape.

In 1984, the predecessor of China Unicom Qingdao brand – the Qingdao telecommunications bureau – established the Xinhao Hill carrier system. This system, which consisted of a large antenna tower and supporting communication devices, played a significant role in communication and socio-economic development.

Presently, the microwave base station of the Xinhao Hill carrier system has been replaced by advanced 5G base stations that provide strong support to Qingdao's communication network.

China Unicom has also established over 1,700 base stations along Qingdao's coastline that provide coverage up to 97 kilometers away at sea.
