The city of Qingdao in East China's Shandong province has plans to build an advanced agricultural city with the introduction of a group of low-carbon, high-yield and intelligent facilities.

The city recently issued the Implementation Plan for the Modernization of Qingdao Facility Agriculture (2023-25).

Agricultural facilities are valued highly in the modern agricultural sector, as their scientific and technological elements help counter the impact and damage brought about by bad weather and natural disasters.

For example, Maozhichang farm in the city has applied a rain-shelter greenhouse, which assists the most advanced grape cultivation facility in North China, and it has obtained a nation-level patent.

With the rain shelter and other intelligent facilities in place, the farm has fully implemented integrated operations. The annual sales of the farm can now reach 120 million yuan ($16.36 million), while the collective income of the village has increased by over 3 million yuan on average every year in recent years.

After being selected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs as the site for the first national conference themed on modern facility agriculture, Qingdao has taken the lead in promulgating the plan among provinces and cities across the country.

The plan proposes building a national demonstration city for modern facility agriculture. It will focus on the promotion and application of new materials, new equipment, new technologies and new models of facility agriculture.

Moreover, the plan proposes that by 2025, the city will strive to build two standardized zones for modern facility agriculture, with advanced planting and breeding models, improved land use efficiency, high-quality and efficient production.

What's more, the city's capabilities for stable production and supply of the agricultural industry are expected to be significantly improved.

Overall, intelligent and innovative agriculture in the city will be at the forefront of the country and the province, according to the plan.
