Qingdao's 2nd subsea tunnel to open in 2027
The much anticipated second subsea tunnel project in Qingdao - the world's longest subsea road tunnel - is expected to be completed and put into operation in December 2027, local media outlets reported.
The main line of the project is 17.48 kilometers long. The tunnel is 14.37 km long, and 9.95 km of which is under the sea. Its deepest section will extend 115 meters below sea level.
Spanning across Jiaozhou Bay, the tunnel will connect the eastern and western parts of the city. It stretches from Huaihe East Road in Qingdao West Coast New Area in the west to the Port of Qingdao in the east.
It is designed with six two-way lanes, plus a service channel in the center. The new tunnel will be open to passenger vehicles and freight vehicles, and the designated speed will be 80 km per hour.
