Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA) is seeing stronger consumer demand as new brands, upgraded commercial formats and immersive experiences reshape local spending. Total retail sales of consumer goods in the area rose 19 percent year-on-year from January to July.
The area has been expanding new consumption formats while introducing more brands and experience-based offerings. From January to July, retail sales by businesses above designated size in wholesale, retail and catering grew 7.8 percent, 23 percent and 7.2 percent, respectively.
At a newly opened durian experience store in Liqun West Coast Jinding Shopping Plaza, customers can sample freshly opened durians on-site. The store offers tree-ripened durians from Southeast Asia, creating an interactive shopping experience centered around a traditional retail product.
Automotive events have also been used to connect consumption with tourism. The 2026 CCPC car king championship in Qingdao attracted more than 15,000 visitors over three days at Cangma Mountain International Tourism Resort, while helping boost demand for nearby accommodation.
The area had organized more than 230 themed consumption promotion events by July, covering shopping, dining, tourism and more. These efforts are helping shift local consumption away from simply purchasing goods toward experiences and leisure.
