Qingdao WCNA breaks ground on national salmon breeding center

On May 26, construction commenced on the Salmonid Genetic Breeding Center in Langya town, Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA). As a flagship project in Qingdao's mission to strengthen its modern blue seed industry, this initiative aims to secure domestic control over Atlantic salmon breeding.

The facility will serve as a comprehensive innovation hub focusing on germplasm protection, new variety development, and industrial breeding services. Key infrastructure includes specialized workshops for parent fish cultivation and fry production, alongside advanced water treatment, quarantine, and testing facilities. By leveraging an academician-led team of experts and cutting-edge pseudo-male induction technology, the project seeks to develop independent intellectual property rights for new varieties.

The primary goal is to significantly increase domestic seed self-sufficiency, thereby reducing reliance on imports. Once operational, the center will bridge critical gaps in high-end aquatic breeding, effectively resolving long-standing challenges in the domestic salmonid supply chain.

By providing a robust Qingdao Solution for sustainable aquaculture, the center is set to enhance China's core competitiveness in the global seed market and inject strong momentum into the structural transformation of the marine economy.
