As the starting point of Qingdao's modern urban development, Shinan district is preserving its historic neighborhoods while giving them new roles through cultural resources and creative designs.

Home to the city's richest collection of historic buildings, former residences of notable figures, and registered museums, the district has made traditional cultural treasures and resources a central part of its urban renewal strategy. Rather than preserving old buildings as static landmarks, Shinan has restored and repurposed them as museums, exhibition venues, and public cultural spaces.

One example is the building that formerly housed the Qingdao Chamber of Commerce, which dates back to 1906. Restored based on historical records and photographs, it has been transformed into a museum, where visitors can learn about Qingdao's commercial history.

Historic residences have also been brought back to life. The former home of pioneering dramatist Zhao Taimou now hosts exhibitions, lectures, and cultural events.

To encourage more visitors to explore the old town, Shinan has introduced themed cultural tourism routes linking museums, historic architecture, and popular attractions. New cafés, bookstores, and creative studios have set up shop in renovated buildings, bringing fresh energy to century-old streets.

By combining historic conservation with modern cultural activities, Shinan district is preserving the city's history while creating new spaces for residents and visitors to experience it.
