The State Council approved in 2012 to annul the previous Huangdao district and Jiaonan sub-city and establish the new Huangdao district on the west coast of Jiaozhou Bay.
Qingdao Western Coast New Zone, approved by the State Council in 2014, covers all the administrative regions of Huangdao district. It has a land area of 2,127 square kilometers, a coastline of 282 kilometers and a population of 1.8 million.
The zone possesses six state level industry parks in its scope, namely Qingdao Economic Technical Development Zone, Qingdao Qianwan Bonded Port, Qingdao Western Coast Export Processing Zone, Experimental Industrial Development Zone for New Technologies, Qingdao Sino-German Ecopark and Phoenix Island Tourist Resort. Furthermore, it has four provincial industry parks including Jiaonan Economic Development Zone, Qingdao Port Economy Development Zone, Langyatai Tourist Resort and Lingshan Bay Tourist Resort.
