Qingdao city boosts marine, film industries to accelerate economy

Qingdao, a well-known and beautiful coastal city in East China's Shandong province, is developing its economy and society by promoting various industries including marine facilities, films and conventions and exhibitions, according to local authorities.

The city leads the country in marine science and technology. For example, there are 26 marine-related scientific research institutions, 19 percent of such facilities in the country. It also gets technological and intellectual support from several national institutions such as the national ocean pilot laboratory and the national center for quality inspection of marine equipment.

According to official statistics, the city's gross marine product reached 332.7 billion yuan ($49.45 billion) in 2018, an increase of 15.6 percent compared with the previous year and 27.7 percent of the city's gross domestic product (GDP).

To make full use of the marine industry, Qingdao is integrating it with other industries such as manufacturing, medicine and education. Emerging marine industries covering marine biomedicine and new materials are expected to form to supplement traditional marine industries such as marine transportation, engineering equipment and coastal tourism.

The city promotes its coastal tourism through improving its marine environment. As a result, Jiaozhou Bay now accounts for 73.7 percent of local high quality water, 10.3 percent more than five years ago, according to a report issued by Qingdao's bureau of ecology and environment at the beginning of 2019.

Qingdao is also building the largest film and television base in the world. It was awarded the title of “World Film City” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2017, and has been the site of several shoots of popular Chinese films such as Wandering Earth and Crazy Alien.

What's more, as a further commitment to its all-round development it holds annual events such as an international fashion week, beer festival and maritime marathon, and also hosted the 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in 2018.
