(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2019-02-21

East China's Shandong province will build world-class seaports, develop smart ocean programs, and protect islands and coastlines in a scientific way.

During the second session of the 13th Shandong Provincial People's Congress, representatives from the province's coastal cities such as Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai shared their work experience and offered proposals for the development of the ocean economy.

Li Fengli, chairman of Qingdao Port Group, said that Qingdao Port will adhere to high-quality development and rely on high efficiency and excellent service to attract more shipping routes.

"We will rely on the port's geographical advantages and high-quality services to enhance its assembling and evacuating capability ability and attract more cargo distribution," Li said.

"Better services, higher efficiency and more reasonable prices will lead to greater competitiveness.”

Qingdao Port is one of the world's 10 busiest ports linking China with over 700 ports worldwide. It reported a yearly throughput of 540 million metric tons of goods last year.

Qingdao Port International, listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Jan 21, is now both on the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong capital markets, which gives a new impetus to the company's development.

Sun Fuchun, chairman of Yantai Port Group, said that Yantai Port's annual container throughput just exceeded 3 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) in 2018, which is a far cry from Qingdao Port's 19.3 million TEU.

We will settle down and make good planning to promote the priority development of container business and contribute more to local economic development, Sun said.

Three smart platforms of port financing, trade and management will be built at the Yantai Port to create an "intelligent port" with international recognition, Sun added.
