Shandong scores well in protection of intangible cultural heritages

Shandong province has achieved fruitful results in the protection of intangible cultural heritages, according to a press conference convened by the Shandong provincial department of culture on Jan 31 in Jinan.

According to the Shandong provincial cultural center Shandong now has eight items included in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, 173 national intangible cultural heritages, 751 provincial ones, 2,290 municipal-level ones and 9,269 county-level ones.

In addition, the province has 51 national-level, 296 provincial-level, 2,063 municipal-level and 5,916 county-level inheritors of intangible cultural heritages.

In a bid to promote the protection, inheritance and development of local intangible cultural heritages, the Shandong provincial department of culture has organized 15 special training courses, with about 650 inheritors taking part.

With other training courses held in the province's 17 cities, nearly 5,000 inheritors have been trained.

Meanwhile, Shandong has been making strong efforts to rejuvenate the traditional craft industry.

The province's 14 items have been included in the national revitalization list of Chinese traditional crafts. Three Shandong-based enterprises have been recognized as national intangible cultural heritage demonstration bases by the Ministry of Culture while 68 others have been named provincial ones.

Shandong has set up traditional craft workstations in four enterprises and traditional craft key laboratories in two universities.

More than 1.1 million enterprises and individual businesses are engaged in traditional crafts, with annual total revenue topping 126.7 billion yuan ($20 billion), which contributes 13.5 billion yuan to taxation and creates three million jobs.

In addition, Shandong has one national cultural ecological protection experimental area and nine provincial ones.
