Qingdao authorities on Friday announced plans to establish a top-notch scenic resort in the city's western coastal area.

The project, named "Shanhaidao" (which means Mountains-Sea-Islands in Chinese) will integrate natural and cultural resources in the area and include the famous Dazhu Mountain, Langyatai Resort and Lingshan Island in Qingdao West Coast New District.

Speaking at a press conference, the District's tourism authority pledged to enhance infrastructure and supporting facilities, promote new tourism products and improve services in the area to gear up to apply for 5A status – the highest rank for scenic spots in China.

Assuming a successful bid, Shanhaidao will become the first 5A scenic resort in the District and the second in Qingdao after Laoshan Scenic Resort.

The District will set aside a 20-million-yuan ($3,070,000) tourism development fund to "extensively advertise" its tourism resources, according to authorities. It will also lure students from Hong Kong and Macao by holding tourism promotional events in the region in July.
